On Music:
“The auditory nerve is very closely connected to the limbic system so that sound (i.e. music) does not have to go through the cortex of the brain but goes directly to the heart, the senses.” unknown source (noted April 9, 1998)
Rhythm in music imprints language on the brain in a way pure auditory words will not. Slower tempo in classical music develops a framework for learning to occur. NPR report on “The Mozart Effect” (1998)

Marian – I love this post, rich with a blend of delicious quotes and supporting graphics. My heart and eyes swelled by the time I reached the end.
This post brought to mind (triggered a memory) of a post I wrote in the summer of 2012 — The Scent of Memories: http://wp.me/pP1C5-TZ
Thanks for the link. I went right to it! My Grandmother had lilac sachets in her lingerie drawer too and a trellis of lilacs growing up over the porch. I always associate her with that strong, sweet fragrance. It is true: Smell is the strongest and most vivid sense for long-term memories. You must be familiar with Diane Ackerman\’s work: A Natural History of the Senses, great at blending the literary with the scientific.
Thanks for spreading the joy, on my blog today and beyond. By the end of the day you will be The Gutsy Story Contest winner. Let me be the first to congratulate you, Laurie!
Marian – Isn\’t it interesting that so many women in our young-and-spunky age bracket had grandmothers who favored lilac?! And yes, I am familiar with Diane Ackerman\’s work. If any of your readers aren\’t they would do well to avail themselves with her writing.
Thank you for the congratulations. If I do win the contest, I\’m going to select the how-to writing book about emotion 🙂
\”Music is what feelings feel like!\” I so love that line. Can I use it in my new book?
Absolutely! But I am not sure of the attribution for \”Music is what feelings sound like\” if you this include in your book. You might do a Google Advanced search. As you see, it\’s just a snippet! Thanks for the mention–and the visit today.
I love the music quotes. I\’ve seen \”Music is what feelings sound like\” before. I\’m too tired to think about moonbeams now. 🙂
I appreciate your comments including your candor, Merril. We just got back from a long trip, so moonbeams also seem unappealing to me at the moment.
I\’m a morning person–can\’t think well at night at all. 🙂
I love the word \”moonbeam\” though.
A lovely post full of good things!
Thank you. Focusing on the positive in words and pictures, just as you do, is uplifting I think you will agree.
Ah, \”Music is what feelings feel like\” is an absolutely beautiful thought. Kudos on a post filled with richness and beauty. A lovely way to end my evening. Thanks, dear friend!
I\’m glad this post felt uplifting to you. I know you and Bob both love music. Perhaps some music therapy is in order? More references to the power of music in the February Purple Passages post. Thanks for the visit–and the comment, Sherrey.
My favorite quote was about dreams and regrets. It\’s so true that life loses its luster once we start seeing it for its disappointments instead of its possibilities.
We tend to get out of balance, don\’t we? The trick is to see life as a shiny penny, not a wooden nickel, as my dad used to say.
